A charity quiz night in Tywyn in memory of pub regular Dave O’Hara has raised £380 for the Wales Air Ambulance.

On Monday, 7 August the Tredegar Arms hosted a quiz night and raffle to raise money for the Wales Air Ambulance and pay tribute to Dave, a local and popular member of the community in Tywyn who sadly passed away in May at the age of 76.

Sian Morris, owner of the Tredegar Arms, expressed her thanks to Dave’s family for allowing and supporting the pub in their hosting of the quiz, as well as quiz master Alex, and the two winning teams for donating the prize money back, which added another £80 to the total.

The quiz was organised when Dave’s family asked for donations in his memory, and raised over £1,900 for the Wales Air Ambulance.

They decided on this cause in particular because of the necessity of keeping Wales Air Ambulance running in a rural area like Tywyn and its surrounding villages.

A number of Dave’s family members attended the quiz including his two daughters, and his son also got involved in the event through a Skype call as he was on holiday.

Dave O’Hara was born in Tywyn, and returned to the town in around 1970 after working in London for some years.

A regular at the pub, Dave was also very involved in the community, being the chairperson of Neuadd Pendre social centre and running Broadwater, a local entertainment agency.

He was a well-recognised regular at the Tredegar Arms and used to love going to their quizzes.

Hayley Bankowski, Dave’s daughter, said: “He was a character – everybody knew him.

“I didn’t realise just how much a part of the community he was until all the condolences and donations came through for him. It seems like he really did make an impression on people.”

Hayley said that the family was “overwhelmed” by the amount of support they had received on the night.

She and her siblings, and their mum Keren O’Hara expressed their gratitude towards everyone who organised, hosted and attended the quiz.

“It was a fantastic night,” Hayley said.

“From every one of us in the family, we can’t thank you enough for coming along and raising money.”
