A PENPARCAU resident has thanked a visitor for helping clean up one of the village’s bus shelters, but insisted it should be cleaned by the council.
Eileen Jones said she was surprised to see a lady visiting from China cleaning up a bus shelter of litter on the morning of Monday, 26 June, saying that while it was a nice thing to do, it is actually the responsibility of the council to keep the shelters tidy.
The volunteer decided to take it upon herself to clean the shelter using a broom and shovel and filling up a bin bag with litter from the shelter.
She has been visiting family in Aberystwyth from China for the last month and will return home on Saturday.
Mrs Jones said the bus shelter had been looking “a mess” but was now spotless.
She said: “It’s always full of leaves and people drop things there. It looks a mess, as does the whole town of Aberystwyth really and it doesn’t reflect well on the council.
“I was out watering the plants and saw this lady from China clearing the shelter up. It sets an example to all of us.
“She’s gone out and cleaned it off her own back. Really the council should be doing it, but how often do they do it?
“If the lady was staying longer I’d have asked her if she could go around the town and show the council how it should be done.”
A Ceredigion Council spokesperson said the authority did clean bus shelters, but urged members of the public not to dispose of litter by throwing it on the floor.
