A church in Gwynedd has won £1500 for coming up with the idea of making a garden of tranquillity to remember those who died during the pandemic.

The garden to the rear of Holy Trinity Church, Penrhyndeudraeth, will contain raised wheelchair accessible beds of flowers and vegetables, a conservation area for education and benches to sit and enjoy the views of the Dwyryd Estuary.

The church, awarded the prize for becoming the Wales Regional Finalist in Ecclesiastical Insurance’s Good News competition, will go up against other regional finalists in the final in London in May. The public can help the judges choose the overall national winner, who will receive a further £6,000, by voting at www.ecclesiastical.com/churchcomp

“The idea of a garden in the busy town where everyone can visit to rest and reflect on the past two years was considered some time ago, it just took the opportunity to apply to this competition and the support of Ramblers Association and Community Payback Scheme, businesses and residents of the town to realise this first stage,” said church secretary Angela Swann.
