A campaign to keep Tywyn’s only independent cinema open is continuing to gain momentum as film lovers and local groups offer an outpouring of support and donations.
The Magic Lantern has now raised over £10,000 for its campaign to fix its projector so films can continued to be screened, meaning staff are over half way to generating the £18,000 they need.
On 30 July the team from the cinema announced that the optical block from their projector was in urgent need of replacement.
They subsequently set up a GoFundMe page – uk.gofundme.com/f/the-poorly-projector – to help raise money.
The 100-year-old cinema, which also serves as a thriving hub for the community of Tywyn, could be at risk of closure if the block is not replaced within six months.
But the Magic Lantern team have been busy rallying support behind securing the future of their cinema and donations show no sign of stopping just yet.
Annie Grundy, programmer for the Magic Lantern, said: “People have been amazing and really supportive, and what’s really nice to see is the messages of support that people have left on our fundraising page.
“I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has donated – you’ve knocked us off our seats.”
