The battle over who owns Tywyn’s promenade has escalated after Gwynedd Council tried installing parking meters.

Workers from Gwynedd Council began installing parking meters along the promenade in Tywyn on Thursday, before stopping suddenly.

Cllr John Pughe, of Tywyn Town Council, said: “Gwynedd informed us they planned to install parking meters, but that we would be consulted beforehand.

“The next day, workers started installing poles and bases before they were told to stop.”

The argument over who owns the land along the promenade has been hotly contested over the years.

Tywyn Town Council has vehemently opposed any plans to charge for parking, stating the land was gifted to the community for ‘the good of the town’ by industrialist and benefactor John Corbett in 1889.

Gwynedd Council confirmed this week that it still intends to push ahead with the parking fee plans.
