AN OAR-SOME sports club has rowed the ‘coast of Wales’ in 24 hours for charity - without getting their feet wet.

Two years ago in the Cob to Cardiff Challenge, it took 10 days for Madog MYC to row from Porthmadog to Cardiff in a Celtic Longboat.

Last week they went one better and rowed the whole of the coast of Wales in a 24-hour rowathon all in aid of Sport Relief, raising a four-figure sum for charity without leaving Porthmadog or even getting their feet wet.

Starting at 7pm on Thursday evening members of MYC rowing club rowed on up to four indoor rowing machines at the Madog Yacht Club in Pen Cei, with a few night owls and insomniacs rowing through the night.

Then in the morning they transferred to the entrance of Tesco’s superstore in the town where more members joined in and kept the rowing machines going until 7pm on Friday evening.

They rowed a total of 419 miles, just beating the target by 1.5 miles representing the coast of Wales from Point of Ayr in the north to Chepstow in the south, and in the process raising over £1,274 for the BBC’s Sport Relief.

Richard Gloster who organised the event, and who stayed awake for nearly the whole 24 hours, said: “It was a race against time in the last hour to achieve our goal, but we achieved it thanks to a great team and help from friends and passers by giving club members the occasional break.

“The amount that was raised for such a great charity was way beyond our expectations.

“Thank you to everyone that contributed.”
