The journey of Porthmadog football club since 1884 has been documented in a new book called Clwb Peldroed Porthmadog.
Author Martin Thomas has lived in Porthmadog since birth and enjoyed supporting the football team, which began in 1872, as a young boy.
“As a passionate supporter in the ‘70s and ‘80s, I thought it would be a good idea to try to chart the history of the club from its ‘birth’ to the present day,” the 60-year-old explained.
“Some of the history is a bit sketchy, where no newspaper reports can be found, but other times, especially the glory years, have been well covered.”
After scouring Gwynedd Archives and old newspaper articles – including many from the Cambrian News – Martin has put together Clwb Peldroed Porthmadog which details the club’s progression.
The club’s successes and failures since 1884 are detailed by Martin, with accompanying photographs allowing the reader to journey through time to see how the club and its members have changed over time.
Porthmadog entered the Welsh Cup competition for the first time in 1885/6 but unfortunately never got any further than the third round.
During the 1885/86 competition, Porthmadog beat Caernarvon 2-1, but then lost to Bangor during the second round 4-0.
Martin is a football fan, and often watched his local team.
The book will be available from Siop Eifionydd, Porthmadog, and Martin is also selling copies on eBay.
