It is heartening to read Gareth Kelly’s letter ‘Tidal power to play big part’ (Letters, 12 January). It has long been a mystery to me why wave and tidal power have been so under-researched and under-resourced by successive Tory and Labour governments.
Wales and the rest of the UK have an enormous mileage of coastline, offering us massive potential for energy and jobs, but since Prof Stephen Salter of Edinburgh University invented his then-famous Salter’s Ducks in the 1970s – only to be abandoned by the Tory government of the time – there has been precious little activity on this front.
Lazy governments under the domination of the oil industry have sold us down the river again and again, leaving us in a weak and desperate position in our struggle against global overheating.
Regarding Gareth’s point about carbon capture, Ceredigion council is not playing its full part either. Over the last few years its planners seem to have been hell-bent on sacrificing our best carbon storage mechanisms to the chainsaw. Just drive anywhere around the county and, to someone who has known the landscape for over 30 years, the gaps and stumps of previous beauty are sorely evident.
