THE March meeting – Dathlu Dydd Gwyl Dewi – actually fell on 1 March this year.Members met in The Hive and received a warm welcoming, with delicious Welsh cawl and all the trimmings.President Neris Lloyd welcomed everybody and only a short amount of business was discussed, with a request for more ideas for the annual trip as costs had ruled out the original plan. Then she introduced guest speaker Henry Jones, a born and bred Aberaeron resident who gave a talk on the shops and characters he remembered between 1945 and 1960.There were so many shops then, including five bakeries, that no-one needed to leave the town to buy anything. He also included some well-known old characters who were remembered by quite a few of the members. His talk was told with his usual humour and vast local knowledge, and made for an entertaining after-meal treat. The vote of thanks was given by Carol Grinszpan. The competition for a historical picture of Aberaeron was won by Linda Hughes with a picture of one of the flour ships that came into the harbour regularly. Eleanor Evans came second. The next meeting will be a cookery demonstration of meals for one or two, by a WI member, and will be held at the British Legion Hall on the first Wednesday in April. All are welcome.
