WI
ABERAERON WI held their Annual Dathlu Dydd Gwyl Dewi Sant at the sports club, where 36 members were welcomed by president Neris Lloyd.
Business matters were quickly concluded and we had a delicious meal of cawl and apple pie, which was enjoyed by all.
President Neris then introduced the speaker, Arwel Jones from Ciliau Aeron, who is very much involved in the coming Bicentennial Celebrations of the migration of many Welsh families to Ohio USA, starting in 1818.
He told them about the reasons for this, much poverty led to many farmers being unable to provide for their families.
By 1833 it had become a mass migration, and about 3000 people left Ceredigion to live over in Ohio.
This summer sees many events to celebrate this, including a big Concert in Aberaeron Square Field on 30 June.
There about 50 people coming over from Ohio to join in with the celebrations, which have taken four years to prepare.
The vote of thanks for such an interesting and informative talk was given by Judy Southgate.
The competition for any piece of American memorabilia was won by Jackie Swetman with Ann Evans coming second.
The raffle was won by Karolyn Harris.
The next meeting will be on 4 April in the British Legion Hall, when Becky Stead will talk about Button Jewellery.
Talks
THE last of this winter’s talks will be held in the vestry of Tabernacl Chapel on Tuesday, 20 March, at 7.30pm.
Elenid Jones will give the talk ‘From Neuaddlwyd to Madagascar’.
This year marks the bicentenary of the mission to Madagascar from the chapel at Neuaddlwyd.
Two ministers, David Jones and Thomas Bevan, left Ceredigion for the island nation off the coat of East Africa and formed a church which still thrives today.
Elenid, whose family hail from Newcastle Emlyn, has visited the current leaders of the Madagascan Church in prepartion for this year’s celebrations to mark two hundred years of the Christian message being taken there.
