Cambrian Floral Society

Wednesday, 5 September saw the society reconvene for the new session with an introductory/social evening at Bethel Chapel Vestry.

Chairman John James welcomed everyone and was delighted to introduce five new members to flower arranging.

Before proceeding with a short meeting he asked everyone present to stand in silence to remember Margaret Dyfri Jones, who passed away in July, and who was a faithful and loyal member of the society since its formation.

During a short meeting the chairman gave a report on the latest activities and financial position which is looking very healthy.

Refreshments, which had been provided by Sylvia Greenleaf and Marian Weston, were served before members sat down to a short flower arranging demonstration.

Marian commenced by showing how to make simple all-round arrangements using purple and white lisianthus, lemon and dark red dianthus which were then placed onto a dark red bicycle container, thus altering the whole look of the arrangements.

John followed by creating arrangements around pieces of beautiful driftwood which he had acquired over the years. He outlined his first arrangement with spotted laurel into which he introduced magenta and pink dianthus. His second design was outlined with buttercup ivy and mile a minute. This design in its autumnal colours hinted at the harvest time of year. The base arrangement was placed partly into a pin holder and partly floral foam. The flowers used were peach gladiolus and yellow tinged with orange roses. Also at the base he placed a pineapple for contrast of texture. The top arrangement again used the yellow/orange roses together with beautiful branches of rowan berries.

Thanks were expressed to Ann Bates, Mae Cullum, Sylvia Greenleaf and Ann Watson for their valuable assistance with the refreshments.

The society boasts that it don’t have to ask any of its members for help – it’s always offered so gladly and willingly.

The next meeting will be held at Bethel Chapel Vestry on Wednesday, 3 October at 7pm, when Pixie Harcourt will give an autumnal demonstration.

Rotary Club

EVERY year, the Rotary Club awards a Lionel White Scholarship, which offers financial support for a young person from the Aberystwyth area wishing to travel abroad for humanitarian and experience-widening purposes.

This year’s recipient was Rachel Donnison, a former student of Ysgol Penglais who is now studying at Bath University.

Rachel visited Fiji under the Think Pacific project, a Fijian charitable trust which aims to empower disadvantaged young people to overcome poverty and achieve holistic health, to improve their education and their sports development.

She reported on her experience in an informative illustrated talk to the club.

The visit had involved staying in a traditional village, meeting families, visiting schools and shadowing teachers, she said.

It had given her an insight into the way of life and customs of the Fijian people.

The project ran a healthcare workshop, emphasising the importance of a balanced diet and educating on health issues such as heart attacks and strokes, and the treatment of cuts and bruises.
