CPPAE/AEPPA

CPPAE/AEPPA is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the signing of the twinning charter between Aberystwyth and Esquel, a town in the province of Chubut, Argentina.

They have organised a series of events to highlight this important milestone.

Some have already taken place, like the showing of the film Patagonia last February in the newly refurbished theatre of Amgueddfa Ceredigion Museum.

The next one will be an asado (an Argentine barbecue), which will take place in the Penparcau Hub on Friday, 12 July.

Further details to follow.

Ramblers

WHEN Aberystwyth Ramblers walk leader Wyck took a last recce for his linear coast walk from Penbryn to Cwmtydu he was accompanied by a friend from Germany who had travelled all over the world and had even swam amongst Sea Lions off the coast of Peru.

Yet, despite his many visits to Wales he had never yet seen a seal or a dolphin.

Luckily, during the recce a seal popped its head above the sea level to go down again within minutes.

Perhaps it was not quite the experience to expect when going seal spotting, but at least he could now say that he had indeed seen a seal.

On the day of the walk, Saturday, 15 June, the 8am forecast promised wall to wall sunshine.

By 9am this was changed to sunshine and showers and that was more or less how it turned out to be.

The twelve walkers who took part arrived at Cwmtydu well in time to have a coffee at Melyn-y-Gors café before boarding the Cardi Bach coast bus. After a fairly steep ascent from Penbryn the coast path leads along the top of some rugged cliffs with lovely views of the well hidden beaches below. Because of the slight drizzle, light enough not to get soaked, Wyck decided not to stop for lunch on that stretch, but to join St Carannog (the statue) overlooking the bay of Llangrannog.

A downpour brought out the umbrellas during the lunch stop, but from there on the weather improved. In fact, during the rest of the walk the constantly changing light, dark cloud shadows moving along the light green sea was a real bonus and threw into sharp relief the magnificent shapes of the rocks, now bathing in sunshine.

At the end of the walk, of course, there was the impressive view down into Cwmtydu and along the coast towards New Quay.

Back in Cwmtydu the sun was full out so the afternoon could be rounded off by another pleasant visit to the café.

Cardiganshire Horticultural Society

THE second of the society’s six summer outings for 2019, took place on Wednesday, 12 June, and saw 38 people defying weather and enjoying a good day out in rural Shropshire.

The party arrived mid-morning at Upper Shadymoor Farm, near Shrewsbury, for coffee and homemade biscuits. After which Kevin and Joy Fox, the owners, told them about the management of the farm post foot and mouth disease and the way that they have successfully diversified the farm. Kristian Hickson Booth then talked about the way she uses the farm gardens as a base for her successful consultancy practice. After which the party split into groups and were taken to see in addition to the gardens with their Capability Brown type landscaping, the Glamping Site and the Deer Enterprise. A very interesting morning came to an end with a buffet lunch, and seeing the garden of Sambrook Manor near Newport. Eileen Mitchell welcomed the group to her immaculate garden which contained much planting of interest, including a delightful miniature Japanese Garden, several members commenting as they walked round that there was not a weed to be seen anywhere. A wonderful visit duly finished with tea and splendid homemade cakes.

The next trip of the season will be on Sunday, 23 June, and is an afternoon visit using own transport to Mrs Johnes’s Garden on the Old Hafod Estate to see and hear from some of the trustees of the Hafod Trust, the story of the rescue from dereliction of what was once an important focal point on the estate.

Newcomers to the trips can be assured of a warm welcome and more information on the full programme of summer outings is available from John and Sue Wildig on 01970 623713.
