Parkinson’s UK

AFTER Marc Cole had come to speak to the group in March about the Dyfed Horse shires in Eglwyswrw, the group decided to go there on a trip.

They dressed one of the horses and connected her to the chariot and we all had a ride around the farm, where Prince Charles and Camilla had visited and done the same trip a year ago.

They called at the 6th century church of St Brynach in Nevern, which is a wonderful church and in the cemetery there are two bleeding Elm Trees and a cross of slab.

After Bethan, Parkinson’s nurse, had retired, the Hywel Dda Trust advertised the job twice but have not yet been successful so far, so the group met AM Elin Jones to see what she could do, as the Parkinson’s patients have to wait longer than 12 months to be seen.

As Peter Gardner has not been well enough to come to the meeting, his wife Celia met with the group in the meeting with Elin Jones, invited the group to go to their house for a coffee morning, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed and had a wonderful walk around the fabulous garden.

Celia collected donations for Margaret Gibbons, who had passed away, as she and Dr Peter Gardner and others started the Parkinson’s group in Aberystwyth and these donations will be presented when a service of thanks for Margaret’s life will be held in August.

The chairman thanked Celia and Peter for allowing them to go to their home for a coffee morning.

On Monday, 22 July at 2pm, Hugh Parry showed old gramophones and records at the meeting.

Stroke club

FOR the club’s annual summer holiday this year, 28 members travelled north to Llandudno for a stay in the Four Oaks Hotel on the promenade. A pleasant journey found them arriving at 3pm.

Now began a jolly week of good weather, great food, superb staff for all to enjoy.

At the end of the week, at the last dinner, Jean asked the waitress if the chef would come out so they could thank him, and they showed their appreciation with a great round of applause.

The first day was for all the members to please themselves, shopping high on the agenda no doubt! Whilst in Debenhams, the mobility scooter of Huw broke down and the staff there came to his aid, rang the company, and a replacement was delivered.

On Wednesday, there was a mystery tour, going south to Betwsycoed and then down the Nant Ffrancon Pass to Bangor, ending in Beaumaris; a lovely town with beautiful floral displays all around.

On the next day, a trip to Prestatyn with coach parking problems which were solved by the Tesco garage and their staff. A letter of thanks to be sent by Jen, the driver’s wife, who helped all a great deal.

Each evening there was entertainment, bingo, jokes, music and dancing. Three members won on three separate evenings.

All too soon it was time to pack and get ready to return home. A drive via the Horse Shoe Pass and a narrow riverside detour that had to be abandoned and a return to the main road through Llangollen, soon had us on the road to Bala, Dolgellau, and on to Machynlleth and then home.

The excellent driver, Ron, stopped at various points to let members alight and gather luggage on route so all arrived back safe and sound.

Thanks to all who helped with luggage, assisting all round to enable the group to enjoy the holiday break.

A terrific round of applause for Audrey for all her splendid arranging of this and all the work she does for the club.

Printmakers

THE 2019 National Library annual Lecture organised by the Friends of the Library, together with the Aberystwyth Printmakers, was given by the artist Clive Hicks Jenkins on Saturday, 13 July at 2pm.

This was the second of a series of four talks organised by Aberystwyth Printmakers linking the four free art galleries - Aberystwyth Art Centre, The National Library of Wales, Ceredigion Museum and the University School of Art.

Each talk is based on the promotion of fine art printmaking and Clive spoke about his collaboration with Dan Bugg, a master printer at the Penfold Press.

Together they created a series of 14 screen prints which were based on the retelling of the classic tale of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by Simon Armitage.

To a riveted audience Clive gave a brief introduction to his early years as a dancer and choreographer before becoming a full-time self-taught artist. His formative experiences led to an individual and personal expression of visual development through drawing and painting.

His response to the retelling of the wonderful Simon Armitage Sir Gawain tale took him to a beautiful, magical and challenging dream-world.

His talk was illustrated with decorative images of his sketches, models, paintings and the final prints, each one a many faceted jewel.

During his revelation of the process of production he emphasised the collaboration with Dan Bugg and the eventual connection with Simon Armitage.

The images were made in response to the retailing and were not a commission.

Each of the 14 images was made as a painting initially and then produced as a limited edition print at Penfold Press.

It was a fascinating, stimulating and lucid insight into the working process of a truly creative, inventive and inspiring artist. Simon Callow referred to him as “one of the most individual and complete artists of our time”.

This was certainly a very rich and revealing lecture and one that should not have been missed.

The book Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by Simon Armitage and illustrated by Clive Hicks Jenkins is available at most good book stores, or available online.

There is also a booklet available of the 14 illustrations from the Penfold Press.

The next talk organised by Aberystwyth Printmakers will be by Edwina Ellis about the production of four images for pound coins produced by the Royal Mint for which she created four lino print images of British Bridges.

This will be at Ceredigion Museum later in the year. Details can be found on the Aberystwyth Printmakers’ website: www.aberystwythprintmakers. org.uk.

Inner Wheel

THE Inner Wheel Club of Aberystwyth held their handover dinner at Llety Parc Hotel.

Pat Sani and Chris Sutherns share the role of president and this year Chris was given the chain of office.

Chris’ first duty was to install new member Ann Gee and welcome her to the club.

She congratulated member Cynthia Whiting on her very successful year as chair of District 15 and her fund raising of in excess of £6,500 for Blood Bikes Wales via hair raising stunts such as zip wire!

Thoughts turned to the new programme for next year as members enjoyed an excellent meal and planned to meet using the same format and venue with the addition of more speakers.

Cylch Cinio

AR nos Wener braf o Orffennaf aeth llond bws o aelodau ar wibdaith flynyddol.

Yng nghwmni ein gyrrwr hwyliog fe anelwyd trwyn y bws i gyfeiriad godre Ceredigion.

Yn anffodus, doedd dim modd i gadeirydd y cylch, Dr Richard Edwards, i ymuno ar y daith oherwydd anhwylder ac fe afonwyd cyfarchion yr holl aelodau ato am adferiad llwyr a buan.

Anfonwn ein cyfarfchion hefyd at aelod arall, Islwyn Hughes, sydd wedi derbyn llawdriniaeth yn ddiweddar.

Roedd ein galwad cyntaf yn Amgueddfa Bwêr Mewnol, Tanygroes. Dyma nefoedd i’r rhai hynny sydd wrth eu bodd yn medlan â pheiriannau o bob math.

Mae yno gasgliad rhyfeddol o beiriannau gwahanol gyda’r rhan fwyaf wedi eu hail-eni a’u hadfer i’w hen-ogoniant.

Yn wir fe’u cyflwynwyd gyda chryn falchder a phob peiriant yn dangos dyfeisgarwcch rhyfeddol o sylweddoli eu bod wedi eu hadeiladu mewn oes a fu, ac i bob un fod yn flaengar iawn yn eu cyfnod.

Da gweld bod y defnydd o’r Gymraeg yn dechrau cael ei gyflwyno yn rhai o’r arddangosfeydd.

Y cam nesaf oedd dilyn y ffordd droellog i lawr i Langrannog ac i wledda yn y Pentre Arms a hynny yng nghwmni y Prifardd Idris Reynolds, Brynhoffnant.

Yn fardd ac yn awdur ac yn gofiannydd mae’n un o bersonoliaethau amlycaf y Talwrn a’r Babell Lên.

Cyflwynodd sgwrs ddifyr iawn gan gyfeirio at nifer o hen gymeriadau ardal Sion Cwilt.

Mae ei hiwmor yn unigryw yn ddoniol iawn ac fel sy’n nodweddiadol o fardd da mae ganddo stribedi o gerddi ar ei gof.

Yn absenoldeb y cadeirydd fe lywiwyd y noson gan yr is-gadeirydd, Sion Griffiths, a diolchwyd i’r siaradwr gwâdd gan un o fois godre’r sir, Gwynfor Williams.

Bydd yr is-gadeirydd yn cymryd y gadair ar gyfer y flwyddyn nesaf ac etholwyd John Williams yn isgadeirydd newydd.

Cyflwynodd y trysorydd adroddiad ariannol. Mae Huw Williams yn parhau yn ysgrifennydd a Dickey Wyn Davies yn drysorydd, gyda Wynne Melville Jones a Dafydd Evans yn rhannu cyfrifoldeb gohebwyr y wasg.

Penderfynwyd cyfrannu £100 yr un i bump papur bro y dalgylch: Yr Angor, Y Tincer, Papur Pawb, Y Ddolen ac Y Barcud.

Edrychwn mlaen at flwyddyn lwyddiannus arall ym mis Medi a bydd croeso i nifer o bobol, yn enwedig y rhai sy’n torri eu boliau, am fod yn rhan o gymdeithas fywiog.

Stroke Society

INSTEAD of their annual country picnic outing, members opted to have an afternoon tea party instead – an idea that seemed an increasingly good one as rain started to come down by midday.

Forty members gathered in the Llanina Arms in Llanarth on 19 July for afternoon tea.

They were greeted by chairlady Ann, who introduced three new members to the group and then presented Jen with a cake to celebrate her birthday as members sang the usual refrain.

In the absence of Judith and Jean, the stalwart raffle ticket sellers, the job was taken on by two volunteers.

A splendid feast was then served and enjoyed by all. To follow, the raffle took place.

Thanks were given to the very helpful staff for making the outing so enjoyable.

Audrey, the social secretary, reminded members that the next lunch is at Aberystwyth Golf Club, but with no coach this time. Then it was time to gather all the prizes and head for home.

St David’s Church
