Aberystwyth/Kronberg Twinning, Christmas market

THE Kronberg Christmas market was attended earlier this month by 13 people from the Aberystwyth area, including the present mayor, Mari Turner and consort, Jeremy Turner.

The annual five-day trip to the German twin-town of Kronberg im Taunus was enhanced by the presence of George Nash, an accomplished guitar player who entertained guests at the Stadthalle gathering of all Kronberg’s twin towns of France, Italy and Easy Germany.

Here the mayoral speeches take place and the continuing close links with Kronberg and their many benefits for Twinning Association members and Aberystwyth schools were highlighted by our mayor.

Translation was provided by Dr Barbara Reimer who works tirelessly to maintain links with Aberystwyth.

As well as the usual two-day market stall selling Welsh produce and promoting Aberystwyth in general, the visit included an arranged trip to the volcanic museum at Schotton, near Vogelsburg, an extra performance by George Nash in the foyer of the Kronberg Stadthalle and a beautiful rendition of a Welsh song, sung by Mari Turner at the farewell meal at Haus Altkonig on the final evening.

The hosts in Kronberg were delighted with the continuing links with Aberystwyth, especially with the recent installation of the twinning information board at Parc Kronberg.

Inner Wheel

MEMBERS of Aberystwyth Inner Wheel began Christmas celebrations with a visit to the hall at Abbey-Cwm-Hir organized by Jan Young. This mansion, set in 12 acres of gardens and grounds, has been restored into a building of Gothic Victorian splendour.

At Christmas the 52 rooms of the house are decorated on individual themes and the tour incorporates them all.

The Christmas meal was held in Llety Parc where a raffle raised funds for the club and an impressive collection of toys, toiletries and clothing was assembled by members for donation to the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal.

They next meet in January with a regular evening meeting followed the next week by celebrations for the annual Inner Wheel Day.

Community Christmas

THERE will be a community Christmas afternoon tea at St Paul’s Methodist Centre on Christmas Day between 3pm and 5pm.

Everyone is welcome, especially people who would otherwise be alone on 25 December.

The event is a repeat of the very enjoyable one held last year, and is being run by local volunteers.

Volunteer co-ordinator Jane Powell said: “No one should be alone on Christmas Day unless they want to be.

“So we’re putting on afternoon tea for anyone who wants to come along.

“There will be carols and a quiz, and we hope it’ll be a chance to meet up with old friends and make new ones.

“It’s so easy to stay indoors when it’s cold and dark outside.

“But at this time of year friendship and a sense of community are more important than ever.

“It’s a big part of what Christmas is about.”

The organisers welcome donations and offers of help with planning and on the day itself.

The event is totally free to attend. Tea and cake will be provided, as well as games and entertainment.

Guests can RSVP at nadoligaber@ gmail.com or simply drop in on the day.

If needed, transport can be booked by emailing in advance.

Aberystwyth Community Christmas is a secular event for people of any religion or none.
