THE latest community news from Barmouth
RNLI fun day
DONATIONS from as far afield as Central Asia have helped Barmouth RNLI raise over £1,500 on their annual fun day.
The grey skies and gloomy start to the day did not bode well for Barmouth RNLI’s annual spectacular on Sunday.
The all-weather lifeboat, the Moira Barrie, was put on display out on the beach and the fundraisers set up their stalls in the shelter of the boathouse.
After a slow start, holidaymakers began to drift in to take advantage of the hot drinks and cakes and to grab a bargain at the many stalls, and as it was definitely not a beach day for children, crowds soon gathered to come in and enjoy the games.
Children loved dressing up in RNLI outfits while chatting to the crew and learning all about the lifeboat service.
There was much interest in the community safety officer’s stall set up for the Respect the Water Campaign, where information and advice was available to encourage people to enjoy the coast, but to be aware of the power of the sea and how to stay safe.
During the afternoon a surprise donation was received.
Alex, Nathan and Esther Munday, who live in Kazakhstan, had been so impressed when watching the television programme Saving Lives at Sea, that they decided to raise money for the RNLI.
They made and sold bracelets and beaded jewellery, entertained friends with circus performances, and saved their pocket money to donate to the RNLI.
While visiting Barmouth to see relatives, the ‘Kids from Kazakhstan’ called in to make their donation of £21.
Thanks to the dedication of fundraisers and crew, and to the generosity of the public, over £1,529.52 was raised on the day.
Barmouth RNLI would like to thank all those who visited for their continued support for this worthy cause.
