Shropshire-on-Sea

THE hand of friendship has spanned the width of Wales after the Barmouth area was dubbed ‘Shropshire-on-Sea’.

Following a series of interviews on local radio, Barmouth mayor Val McArdell was pleased to announce that her seaside town had been recognised as Shropshire’s favourite place on Wales’ west coast.

To commemorate the occasion, the Shropshire radio team commissioned acclaimed British artist Alfie Bradley to create a sculpture of the county’s famed iron bridge, built in 1781, nearly a century before Barmouth’s own iconic wooden viaduct was constructed (1867).

In return, Barmouth has given a framed photograph of their own bridge which will proudly hang in BBC Radio Shropshire’s main foyer.

Cllr McArdell was delighted that Barmouth had been recognised in this manner. “It’s wonderful that we’re considered people’s favourite place on the west coast of Wales, we’re very proud of the recognition,” she told the Cambrian News.

“We have a lot of people coming to Barmouth from Shropshire, whether they’re just spending the day, a long weekend or moving to the town, everyone is very welcome.

“To have this wonderful sculpture is a very nice thing for us, quite prestigious really. Alfie Bradley’s next creation will stand on a plinth in Trafalgar Square so it’s really something, we’re very proud.”

The sculpture is currently on temporary display at Cllr McArdell’s art store the Oriel Gallery before it is relocated to a more permanent exhibition space.
