Easter tombola

ON a very cold and wet Easter Monday, Stormy Stan did his best to draw in the crowds to the Lifeboat Station on a windy promenade for Barmouth RNLI’s Easter tombola.

The all-weather lifeboat, the Moira Barrie, was on display on the beach and stalls were set up in the shelter of the boathouse.

There were many excellent prizes to be won on the tombola stall and a delicious assortment of home-made cakes on sale.

The community safety officer’s stall’s offered advice on how to stay safe at sea with the RNLI’s Respect the Water Campaign.

The raffle for the Giant Easter Egg was won by Sharon Cooney.

Thanks to the dedication of fundraisers and crew, and to the generosity of the public, £480.39 was raised on the day. Barmouth RNLI would like to thank all those who braved the weather for their continued support for this worthy cause.

AS usual the meeting was opened by president Jacqui Puddle, and Meirion was sung accompanied by Blodwen Comerford on the piano.

The speaker for the evening was Dilys Williams who gave a most interesting talk on ‘Magic Lantern and Victorian Reality’.

Slides of some horrific and humorous scenes kept the audience amused and attentive for some time.

The main topic being Temperance or should one say the lack of it!

The minutes of the last meeting were agreed and signed and notice given of forthcoming events.

The proposed annual trip for this year will be in June with a visit to Plas Newydd House and Garden and the Toll House Museum at Llanfairpwll on Anglesey.

The results of the 2018 resolution shortlist selection process were reported.

“Mental health matters as much as physical health” is the resolution to be discussed at the NFWI Annual Meeting in June.

Chatty crafters on Tuesday afternoons have been extremely busy making knitted/crochet items for the Syrian refugees in Greece using donated wool.

A total of 253 items were taken last week to a distribution depot in Blaenau Ffestiniog.

This included baby blankets, bootees, hats, cardigans, sleep suits and mittens. Before Christmas a large number of blankets were also sent using wool made up from a whole mile of knitted squares that had also been donated to Barmouth WI.

The theme for the monthly competition was Victorian Memorabilia. The winner was Barbara, second Janet and third, Sheila.

The recent coffee morning in Llanfair raising money for the Denman appeal amounted to £167.05 in spite of the weather!

The scrabble afternoon at Dolgellau was a great success. Barmouth team player Pauline scored 407 making her the winner. Two other members won raffle prizes after pulling out their own numbers!

The local darts match is taking place on Monday, 9 April, at Bala.

There is some good news for the Easter holidays, a bus service to Porthmadog from Barmouth will be running.

The raffle was won by Geraldine, the flowers by Mary. Jacqui then thanked the hostesses of the evening, Carol, Anne and Val.

The next meeting will be in the Arts Room in the Dragon Theatre on Wednesday, 25 April, at 7pm.

The speaker will be Mary Bolt talking about ‘Gardens’.
