Moelwyn Male Choir
THE choir called off their Friday evening concert at Betws y Coed due to the passing of their accompanist Wenna Francis Jones’s mother, Gladys Francis of Wynne Road, whose funeral service takes place today (Thursday) at Bowydd Chapel.
Maenofferen Gallery
THE gallery hosts an exhibition of the creative work of Sian Northy, resident poet; Mari Gwent, community artist; and pupils of Bro Hedd Wyn, Manod and Moelwyn schools until 15 September.
1960s fun day
A FUN day with a 1960s theme will be held at 1.30pm on Sunday at Diffwys Square.
Wynne Roberts will be the guest for the Elvis Live event. There will also be various stalls, fancy dress, raffles and much more.
Proceeds will be donated to specialised dementia services.
Town council
PCSO Delyth Edwards informed the council that she had a site meeting with officers from the environmental health department at a high street building which has been converted into three flats.
She reported that the tenants who were brought to the area by the landlord were in a fragile condition and the building itself is in a serious condition.
The council is to write to Rent Smart Wales regarding the issue, with copies sent to Gwynedd Council’s Adult, Health and Wellbeing department, Liz Saville Roberts MP and Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas AM asking them for support.
Planning
THE council has permitted the following planning applications: an extension to the workshop at Old Station Yard, Llwynygell; alterations to St Mary Magdalene Church, including a new entrance and the conversion of its second floor to provide living accommodation; and an outline application with all details reserved for the erection of one dwelling on land by Arenig.
Bowls
THE Bowling Club had a 8-4 midweek Division One League win over Penmaemawr.
Their winners were Stephen and R Elwyn Jones, Aled and Gareth J Owen, and Mike Burgoyne and Barry J Hughes.
Royal British Legion
THE Legion is recreating its 1928 pilgrimage to the First World War battlefields for thousands of members from Sunday, 5 August, to Thursday, 9 August.
A decade after the end of the war, the Legion organised for veterans and war widows to visit the battlefields of the Somme and Ypres before marching to the Menin Gate in Ypres on 8 August, 1928.
Exactly 90 years later, Great Pilgrimage 90 will be the Legion’s biggest membership event in modern history and will consist of two representatives from each registered branch taking part in the two-day tour of First World War battlefields and cemeteries tour.
The tour will culminate on 8 August with those representatives parading their branch standard and a wreath to the Menin Gate for the One Hundred Days ceremony.
The ceremony will commemorate the last 100 days of the Great War and represent an entire generation that served while defending their country.
The Blaenau Ffestiniog standard bearer will be on parade along with a wreath carrier.
The Sarn Helen standard will also be on parade.
Over 1,100 standard bearers will be march to the Menin Gate for the commemorative service.
Shop closure
THE bookmakers on Church Street has closed its doors for the last time.
For the last eight years it has been run by Rikki Dukes of Manod, who had worked there previously with Smarts Bookmakers for 25 years.
