Cymdeithas hanes

Y SIARADWR yng nghyfarfod mis Chwefror o’r Gymdeithas Hanes oedd Vivian Parry Williams a thestun ei ddarlith oedd ‘Beddau G?yr Ardudwy’.

Mae y mwyafrif o’r rhai a fagwyd yn ‘Stiniog wedi clywed rhywbeth am y chwedl hon, ond heb fod â llawer o wybodaeth amdani.

Eglurodd Vivian bod y lleoliad wedi ei farcio fel Safle Hanesyddol ar hen fapiau Ordnans, a hynny bob ochr i’r ffordd Rufeinig, Sarn Helen, ond nid yw mapiau diweddar yn cyfeirio at y lle. Bu Vivian yn pori drwy adroddiadau nifer o archaeolegwyr a ymwelodd â’r safle yn ystod y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg ac ynghynt ac adroddodd am eu tystiolaeth hwy am beth a ddarganfuwyd ar y safle – adroddiadau oedd yn dangos y dirywiad a fu yno wrth i feini gael eu symud ar gyfer defnydd amaethyddol.

Nid oes tystiolaeth i ddim o werth fod wedi ei ddarganfod yno gan yr ymchwilwyr cynnar, ond y mae dyfalu mai beth oedd yno oedd beddau o’r cyfnod Rhufeinig.

Mae rhai yn dadlau mai oddi yno y daeth y garreg fedd bwysig a gedwir yn awr ym mynwent eglwys Penmachno (Carreg Cantiorix).

Ysywaeth, parhau i ddirywio y mae y safle gyda D?r Cymru wedi bod yn cloddio yno yn ddiweddar wrth adnewyddu eu pibellau.

Dadleuai Vivian bod gwir angen gwneud mwy o waith archeolegol ar y safle, gan ddefnyddio technegau modern er mwyn dysgu beth yw yr hanes y tu ôl i’r stori am y beddau.

Cafwyd gwrandawiad astud i’r sgwrs a diolchwyd gan Ellen Evans.

Y siaradwr yn y cyfarfod nesaf, ar 20 Mawrth, fydd Keith O’Brien gyda’r testun ‘Diwydiannau Trawsfynydd’.
