Hospice
A MEETING took place at the Ffestiniog Town Council Chamber to discuss the possibility of establishing a hospice in the former Physiotherapy Clinic at Towyn Road.
Cllr Glyn Daniels welcomed those present, stating that the council had been offered the said site by the health board and that the building condition is fine but the interior would need renovation.
He introduced Trystan Pritchard from St David’s Hospice Llandudno to explain the work, as well as what would be needed to set up and run the hospice.
As for the Llandudno hospice, it was set up 20 years ago and only exists with the support of that area’s community.
He added that a new hospice is set up to open in Holyhead next year and staffing costs will be £400,000 per annum, which will be paid for with the support and contribution from the island’s residents, government funding and the health board.
There were representatives of some community and town councils at the meeting and many questions were put to Trystan Pritchard as to whether this plan could go ahead in this area with the costings one of the main issues being raised.
It was then decided that the next steps would be to look at the costs of renovating the old physiotherapy building and to research other suitable sites such as Bryn Blodau in Llan Ffestiniog, the Health Centre in Blaenau Ffestiniog and Ysbyty Alltwen, Tremadog where the building costs would be low and the resources are already in place. It was also decide to invite Dafydd Elis-Thomas AM and Liz Saville Roberts MP to support the campaign and the area’s town and parish councils are due to discuss the proposals at their September meetings and will inform Ffestiniog Town Council of any feedback and/or decisions before the end of the month.
