AT the most recent meeting, they had a talk on Nant y Moch by Erwyd Howells.

It was a talk that came straight from the heart, as Erwyd Howells lived in Ponterwyd, about three miles from Nant y Moch, and was a shepherd whose sheep roamed the hills that now rise up above the reservoir.

The reservoir was created in 1964 and forms part of the CwmRheidol hydroelectric power scheme.

John and Jim James were the last people to leave Nant y Moch. Erwyd Howells knew the James family well and told some wonderful anecdotes about them the strangest being the rumour that John had a Celtic head which he sold for £200.

Apparently he did buy it back again!

Jim lost his leg when he was 15 which didn’t seem to hinder him at all.

They saw some very poignant family photographs which portrayed their way of life in the beautiful rolling hills.

The cottages and the chapel which made up Nant y Moch are now under the water of the reservoir, but the stories and pictures brought everything back to life.

The next meeting is today, Wednesday, 5 December at the community hall at 7.30pm. New members welcome.
