Junior fishing

ON 6 July, the Llanilar Angling Association, which has a heavy involvement in nurturing young anglers, closely supported by SP Energy Networks, Aberystwyth, held an inter-schools fishing competition between secondary school children from Ysgol Penweddig and Tregaron.

The event was staged at Dinas resevoir, Ponterwyd, and proved a major success for the second year running, with 33 children attending.

The weather this year was considerably better than last year, resembling a proper summer’s day, rather than the total washout the day received in 2016.

It was pleasing to see the enthusiasm shown; children and even teachers engaged and enjoyed and it is hoped that these events will do much to encourage youngsters to take up the sport.

Tregaron won the competition for the most fish caught in total, and Ysgol Penweddig were the winners of the individual prizes for heaviest bags, with the school responsible for the heaviest individual fish receiving a decorative trophy plate designed by the daughter of Vivian Davies.

Welsh international angler Richy Ricketts won the heaviest bag, followed by his Welsh international teammates Hedd Dafydd in second and Ifor Christie in third.

SP Energy Networks used the event to raise awareness among youngsters to the dangers of overhead power lines and electricity, and provided goodie bags to all children.

Thanks were given to all who volunteered to coach and supervise the children; to SP Energy Networks for the prizes and assistance in organising the event; and also to Peter Bevan of Rheidol Fisheries for kindly stocking the reservoir ready for the event – without his generosity it would not have been such a success.
