Scott Quinnell visit

SCOTT Quinnell has visited the Marian Rugby Girls in Dolgellau.

It was the final instalment of a prize from a national competition which the Dolgellau RFC Girls Rugby squad won last June, and took place at the Marian last Sunday afternoon.

The Marian girls were previously one of 20 teams countrywide to win rugby kit and also gain entry into the next stage of the AEG Grassroots Rugby competition.

Amongst the bundle of full Canterbury rugby strip which consisted of shirts, shorts and socks, were 20 boot bags, water bottles, two ball bags and 20 balls. Along with the kit the club also won a top of the range AEG washing machine which has been put to good use considering last winter’s weather conditions.

To win the competition outright, the girls had to forward a team photograph and, in true Mawddach Valley tradition, entered a stunning parody of Bread of Heaven. Their entry won the competition.

The squad finally got the last part of the prize on Sunday when Welsh rugby legend Scott Quinnell came to the Marian Club house to give them an afternoon of expert coaching.

Thirty-five players and coaches enjoyed the excellent advice given by one of Wales’ most prestigious and famous players.

The afternoon ended with a buffet in the clubhouse provided by club staff and parents of the players with Scott taking time out to answer questions. He also signed numerous autographs and was happy to have ‘selfies’ taken.

Donations

KIND-HEARTED residents in Dolgellau have flocked to support a local couple heading out to Asia to help Nepalese schoolchildren.

The Cambrian News reported earlier this month that Dolgellau’s Post Office manager Suzanne Williams, 54, and her husband Keith, 58, were heading out to the mountainous country to deliver warm clothes to schoolchildren in Shreekhandapur before the cold winter months.

The couple began supporting the school in 2009 when their son Carl volunteered there as a teacher.

Now fulfilling a “lifelong dream” to head to Nepal, Suzanne has applauded the townspeople who have dropped off reams of warm clothing for the adventurous duo to deliver to the primary school children.

“Thank you so much to everyone who has donated warm clothing so far,” Suzanne said.

“You are all truly awesome. Keep them coming you amazing people!”

Clothing donations are being accepted at the town’s post office or alternatively visit https://www. justgiving.com/crowdfunding/suzanne-williams to donate cash towards the cause.
