THE latest community news from Drefach Felindre
Gardening club
THE summer is naturally a busy time in the garden, but members still found time to attend a very interesting, inspiring and well-illustrated talk by Jennifer Matthews from Moorland Cottage Plants and Gardens at the start of August.
She gave a wonderful insight into ornamental grasses.
She herself grows around 100 varieties of grasses, rush and sedge.
She covered different varieties, how they could be used and described grasses that thrive in our climate.
In July, the club had a stall at Drefach Felindre Carnival selling plants.
The stall raised money towards community projects such as the dye bed gardens at the National Wool Museum and the annual show.
Next month’s meeting is on Wednesday, 5 September, and is about the gardens of Plas Tan y Bwlch in Snowdonia.
The talk will be given by Tony Russell, whose career with plants and gardens began in 1978 when, soon after leaving school, he joined the Forestry Commission in Snowdonia.
Drefach Felindre Gardening Club meetings are usually held on the first Wednesday of each month at the Red Dragon Hall from 7.30pm.
The club arranges visits to award-winning and historic gardens, member’s gardens and specialist nurseries throughout the year.
They also have a dye bed project linked with Ysgol Penboyr and the National Wool Museum in the village.
The 31st annual horticultural and craft show run by Drefach Felindre Gardening Club will take place on Saturday, 8 September, in the Red Dragon Hall.
The show is sponsored by Moduron Teifi Motors, Trefhedyn Garden Centre and Teifi Valley Garden Machinery.
The club also acknowledges the provision of tables by Fedwen Tentage Ltd.
The hall will be open to receive exhibits from 9am to 10.45am and entry fees are 30p an item for adults and 10p an item for children.
Judging will then take place from 11am to 2pm.
The show will then be open to the public from 2pm to 4pm.
Presentation of the show awards will take place at 3.15pm.
The presentations will be made by the president of the day, Cllr Ken Howell.
There will be a raffle and refreshments available.
There is also an exhibition of paintings and drawings by the pupils of Ysgol Penboyr.
Show schedules and more information is available from the show co-ordinator, Sheila Phillips.
