Gardening club

ON the evening of Wednesday, 1 May, members met an hour before the main meeting to forage around the village with Adele Nozedar.

They walked through the church yard and discovered that many of the plants and flowers that were there were edible and useful. Daisy, plantain leaves, herb robert and even ground elder and dandelions! They tasted some of the flowers and Adele had some dandelion root for them to try. On returning to the hall Adele gave them a fascinating talk on foraging and her take on why we classify plants as we do and whether we should. Adele is an author, food writer and forager.

May is also the month when the club holds its annual plant sale.

This will take place on Saturday, 11 May, at the Red Dragon Hall from 9.30am to noon. There will be garden produce, plants and refreshments available.

Next months meeting will be on Wednesday, 5 June, when Malcolm Berry will be talking about Weaving the Web towards a Natural Garden. He will talk about encouraging biodiversity using a mix of approaches.

Drefach Felindre Gardening Club meetings are usually held on the first Wednesday of each month at the Red Dragon Hall in from 7.30pm. Free refreshments are served following the speaker’s presentation and club members bring along items for the raffle, such as spare plants and garden produce. We also organise a seed swap.

There is a warm welcome for everyone and guests pay a fee of £2 per meeting person which includes refreshments. Annual membership costs just £10.

In addition, the club holds two plant sales every year in May and July. Donations of plants, gardening items and garden produce are much appreciated for these events and proceeds go towards community projects such as the annual Horticultural and Craft Show held each year in September.

The club arranges visits to award winning and historic gardens, member’s gardens and specialist nurseries throughout the year. We also have a Dye Bed project linked with Ysgol Penboyr and the National Wool Museum in the village.
