THE latest community news from Dyffryn and Talybont
Gardening Club
THE Annual General Meeting of Dyffryn and Talybont Gardening Club took place at Hendre Coed on Monday, 9 April.
Chair began her report on the previous year by describing it as tricky, but despite some personal health problems and challenges faced by difficult weather conditions, members had continued to be very supportive of the club.
The destructive, gale force winds, at the start of the month necessitated a decision, not taken lightly,to cancel the Spring Show.
The 2017 Summer Show was also affected by a very wet summer. Despite this, it remained one of the highlights of the year and the show looked amazing.
Finances are not as healthy as we would like, therefore fund raising suggestions and activities will be greatly appreciated. Membership fees will remain at £7.50 for the 2018/2019 year.
The plant and produce stall at each meeting has raised £170 to be shared equally between our two charities, Air Ambulance and Arch Noah.
Apart from thanks to all committee members, thanks go to the members who organise the raffle each month, those who volunteer for the tea rota and the two members who are always on hand to provide manpower when required.
Last, but not least, thanks go to our President who has made the very welcome decision to stand for re-election this year.
Nominations for committee members up for re-election were proposed and seconded.
The committee remains as last year, apart from the position of vice-chair which has previously been vacant. The club is delighted to welcome Val Smedley to this position and can assure her of our continuing support.
President advised members to be patient in dealing with storm damaged plants.
If and when green shoots appear, this is the time to cut back, which could be towards the end of May.
Conifers make take up to two years to recover.
Following the conclusion of business, members enjoyed an excellent meal provided by Kevin and the staff of Hendre Coed.
The next meeting of the club will be on 14 May, in the Church Hall, when local artist, Lavinia Range will enthuse us with the Joy of Painting Flowers.
