Labour meeting

PLASTIC and public transport were the hot topics at Ardudwy Branch Labour Party’s first meeting of 2018.

The New Year ‘chaos’ with local buses - or lack of them - and the need to reduce the use of plastics were discussed at length.

Members have been inundated with complaints from local residents as bus services have been slashed.

The lack of information to travellers waiting for what turned out to be ghost buses at the start of the year has angered residents in Ardudwy and across Gwynedd.

Locally, the 39 service to Porthmadog is no more, and there are no 38 buses on a Saturday. The branch will be contacting Gwynedd Council and local councillors to express their dissatisfaction and ask for more information.

The problem of plastic pollution was also raised.

The branch agreed to begin by working with their local store, The Coop in Barmouth, in an attempt to reduce plastic wrappings.

Shoppers locally have expressed the wish to buy produce such as fruit and veg which is not encased in plastic. Labour and the Coop have a strong historical link, and the branch secretary will contact the local store management and the society to explore ways of reducing the use of plastic.

Chair Martin Wright stated: “We cannot immediately solve the problem of plastic pollution in the seas, but we can make a prompt start in our own community. Think globally, act locally!”

Gardening Club

A GARDENERS Quiz Night was the theme of their first meeting in the new year, held in Dyffryn Church Hall on Monday, 8 January.

Chair opened the meeting with a reminder that the Spring Show on Tuesday, 20 March, will be held in Dyffryn Village Hall. There will be a cakes sale table and a raffle. Contributions to either or both will be gratefully received. All proceeds will go to club funds.

The evening was attended by upwards of 30 members who, having braved the bitterly cold night, enjoyed a quiz containing questions devised by president Guy Lloyd and chair Karen Hall.

There were 50 questions in all covering such topics as: GardenTrivia, Herbaceous Identification, Anagrams and Shrub Identification.

The evening was informative, educational and provided much fun and competition between the various groups participating.

The New Year Sunday lunch will be held at 1957 restaurant on 28 January, and the February meeting will be a Welsh Wine tasting provided by Dylan from Gwin Dylanwad Wine.
