Gardening club

‘Tips and Tricks for the Summer Show’ was the theme of the latest meeting, held in the village hall on Monday, 9 July.

The chairperson opened the meeting, reminding all members to take careful note of the specifications relevant to all entries.

There will be a stall selling cakes to raise money for club funds and one selling plants and produce to raise funds for our charities.

Tips on floral art were given by Dinah Pickard. Flowers and foliage in the miniatures section should be no bigger than a thumb nail, arranged in a container, also small, members were told.

A modern arrangement should be elegant and simple and any accessories should complement, not dominate the arrangement.

A traditional arrangement will have lots of flowers and limited accessories. Arrange all entries a couple of days prior to the show to allow for replacements if required and spray regularly when completed. Cutting stems under water prevents the formation of air bubbles.

Useful hints on flowers and pot plants, given by Dorothy Round, included, the most suitable containers for tall flowers and ways of keeping them upright.

Guy Lloyd, giving tips on the vegetable and fruit section, reminded everyone that the show is not an exhibition, and that all entries must be true to type.

The competition this month, A Limerick on entering the Garden Club Show, was won by Sian Ward. The show will be held in the village hall on Wednesday, 15 August. Entry forms must be returned to the show secretary by Saturday 11 August.
