Fairbourne in the hills
FAIRBOURNE moved to the hills of Yorkshire when the Kirklees Light Railway held a gala to celebrate the railway as it was in the 1960s. The Kirklees Light Railway had brought Katie over to Fairbourne in May for the Centenary of Steam Gala and were so smitten that they decided to recreate it as Fairbourne in the Hills.
Their stations were re-named for the occasion. Golf House had a set of clubs on the platform and Bathing Beach was complete with deck chairs and wind breaks. There was even a facsimile of a 1960s Fairbourne timetable on the station wall.
Former Fairbourne favourites Sian and Katie ran from Fairbourne to Barmouth Ferry and, yes, the ferry did make an appearance on a wagon! Count Louis was running with an old Fairbourne coach in its train and Gwril and Whippit Quick completed the old 1960s line-up.
Austin Moss of the Windmill Farm Railway dressed up as former Fairbourne owner John Wilkins to oversee the proceedings. From the current locomotives, Sherpa made the trip across the Pennines for a brief Yorkshire holiday to make it six Fairbourne engines in action. All that was missing was the sea and the sand!
