THE latest community news from Harlech
Harlech and Ardudwy Leisure
FOLLOWING Jean Napier’s recent talk in Harlech’s poolside café about her book, Bardsey now and then, a list of names was taken of people who would be interested in visiting the island.
The trip was planned for Wednesday, 8 May, but weather conditions meant it was postponed until Friday the 10th, which proved to be an auspicious day to visit the island.
The group set off from Porth Meudwy in near perfect conditions and spent the day exploring magical Ynys Enlli.
Between them, the visitors took in everything the island has to offer; from the lighthouse to the Abbey, via the café, of course, while a few managed to climb Mynydd Enlli and take in the view of the Welsh coast, Ireland and the Isle of Man.
On the return journey, Colin kindly steered the boat below the cliffs so his crew could observe some of the thousands of sea birds nesting on the east side of the hill; a special thrill when a puffin swam by.
All agreed it had been a fabulous experience.
WI
PRESIDENT Jan Cole welcomed members and guests to the May meeting.
The evening started with a rendition of Jerusalem, accompanied by Myfanwy on piano, in memory of members who had passed away during the past year.
Jan informed everyone that Harlech WI had won an award from GMFWI for achieving the most new members (over 30 membership) during the past 12 months. The cup was presented at the spring council held in Rhydymain on 30 April.
Jan thanked everyone who had brought along guests, who decided to join the group as members.
Annette gave out information with reference to the craft club, which will take place in the Old Library on Thursday, 16 May, at 1.30pm. Members will be making small dolls, so take along a needle and scissors. No skills required, just plenty of enthusiasm.
The county letter was then read, with information given out on forthcoming events taking place.
Christine has arranged afternoon tea at Tyddyn Sachau garden centre on Wednesday, 29 May.
Jan asked for names regarding a visit to Plas Cadnant Gardens on 19 June. If enough members want to go, Jan will look into the cost of hiring a minibus. Contact Jan for further details.
There was no raffle prize this month due to the group promoting raffle tickets for the county show.
After a brief discussion it was decided to have another plants and produce sales table in June. There will be no guest speaker as a another of the very popular treasure-hunt walks around Harlech has been arranged. There will be alternative entertainment for those who do not wish to take part.
After the business meeting concluded, it was time for refreshments before a talk from the guest speaker.
Jan introduced Julia Lewis, senior consultant for Neal’s Yard Remedies, a family business which produces natural and organic health and beauty products.
Julia explained how all their products are free from harmful chemicals and are only tested on willing humans; never on animals.
Various samples of hand products were passed around for the ladies to try on their own skin and ask questions about.
Julia asked for a volunteer to take part in a hand massage. Sue Williamson duly obliged and enjoyed being pampered for the next 15 minutes. All the products used on Sue were explained in great detail.
After the session ended all the members received brochures and leaflets about the products used during the demonstration.
Ann was the winner of sample products to take away after everyone had joined in a little game to end a very enjoyable demonstration. Denise gave a vote of thanks on behalf of the members.
The next meeting in the Memorial Hall will be on 12 June for the treasure hunt. Visitors are always welcome.
