THE latest community news from Harlech
Council
THE chairman welcomed Geraint Williams to the meeting to discuss the Christmas lights that have been purchased by him ready for the activities in the town on 30 November.
Mr Williams stated that he was grateful for the council’s contribution towards purchasing the lights but he had concerns that the cost of installing the lights on lamp-posts would be expensive.
Cllr Freya Bentham agreed to contact Gwynedd Council with regard to getting permission to install the lights and the council agreed to pay the cost for the work to be done.
Mr Williams was thanked for coming to the meeting.
Residents’ concerns over the volume of traffic going through the town during the summer season were discussed.
A variety of ideas were put forward on how to solve the problem, but it was agreed to instead monitor the situation as there is no easy solution.
Cllr Freya Bentham reported that the Hoppa bus had not been so successful this year, but it was quite popular in the afternoons.
Members noted that there were not as many signs advertising the service and that more were needed for next year if the service is to run again.
Volunteers will also be needed to promote the service. Anyone interested should contact Cllr Bentham. A meeting will be held on 24 October.
Cllr Bentham also reported that Snowdonia National Park has appointed a contractor to carry out the demolition of the former St David’s Hotel and the work is scheduled to start this month.
She also reported that she had received the results of the speeding survey along Morfa Road and that Gwynedd Council officers had agreed to ask the Go Safe vehicle to visit the area on a regular basis.
During the meeting, it was also noted that 10 parking spaces were lost in Upper Bron y Graig car park when work to create a place for coaches to park was done.
The clerk reported that she had received an email and a letter from Ffestiniog Town Council inviting members to discuss establishing a four-bed hospice in Blaenau Ffestiniog.
The town council also received an email from Stuart Taylor on behalf of the Post Office informing the council that the post office in the town had closed with immediate effect on 23 July and that he could not disclose the reasons why.
The chairman is going to invite the police to the next meeting because of concern at the high volume of burglaries in the area.
Concern and disappointment was voiced that some of the residents of T? Canol will not allow other residents to place flower pots on land in front of the houses even though the area is common land and does not belong to any of the residents.
