THIS year marks the centenary of the end of the First World War in 1918, and the next meeting of the Society will turn its attention to “The man who won the War”, Wales’ only Prime Minister, David Lloyd George.
Lloyd George was Premier from 1916 – 1922, during one of the most turbulent periods of modern British history, handling not only the conflict itself but the aftermath, the Paris peace treaty, the revolt in Ireland, post war reconstruction and industrial unrest, particularly in Wales.
Throughout this period he was Prime Minister without a party, his accession to the premiership having split the Liberals.
In this his concluding talk on Lloyd George, entitled ‘From War leader to the Wilderness’, Tony Richards will discuss the achievements and failures of this most controversial of politicians during the period of his premiership, and his eventual fall from power at the comparatively early age of 59 - never to hold office again.
The meeting will be held next Tuesday, 13 February, at 7.30pm in Neuadd Goffa, the Memorial Hall, in Twtil just opposite Harlech Castle.
Light refreshments will be served following the talk and all are welcome.
BirthdayA SPECIAL birthday deserves a special cake. For one lucky Harlech resident, a cake representing her dog fitted the bill.Sandra Philpott enjoyed her 70th birthday lately and after asking for donations rather than presents, ended up donating £135 to three different charities.“I would like to thank all friends, family and neighbours, and a special thanks to the cafe staff at Harlech Ardudwy Leisure, for making my recent birthday so memorable,” she said. “Also to Linda Soar for the magnificent cake.”If you’re a member of a club, society or group, send your news to [email protected]
