Hanes Llanbed

HANES Llambed’s April meeting, featured a return of Simon Evans, to complete his talk entitled: ‘The History of Parish of Llanwenog’.

This was part two of a detailed and informative description of the history of the parish, which he had begun at the first meeting of the history society’s 2018/19 season.

He spoke about a number of some of the most significant people who came from the parish. For instance, Jac Parcyrhos was one who fought with distinction in many of the battles within the Napoleonic Wars in the early years of the nineteenth century.

The speaker then highlighted the terrible economic conditions for the farming community of west Wales in the 1840 and the resultant emigration of people to the United States. For example, Margaret Evans of Cwrtnewydd converted to the Mormon faith and left Britain for Salt Lake City, Utah, arriving in 1852.

Jenkin Lloyd Jones of Blaenralltdu emigrated and fought in the American civil war within the Union army. He kept a diary which was subsequently published. He also became a Unitarian minister and missionary. Frank Lloyd Wright’s family were others who emigrated to Wisconsin in America. Lloyd Wight became a world renowned architect, creating many major building designs, some of which are designated as national monuments in the USA.

The parish also produced several world class scientists-Dr Dafydd Williams with major research on aircraft. And his brother Prof E J Williams on applied mathematics. Cledlyn Davies was a poet who produced many high quality pieces of written prose.

The next meeting will take place on 21 May when Wieslaw Gdula will speak about: ‘Polish Families in the Lampeter Area’.
