Ramblers
WALKING in the Coed y Bryn area, the influence of T Llew Jones is everywhere apparent; welcome information is given for the general public outside the Village Hall.
But those who remember him vividly as headmaster here until 1975, pay tribute to his expectation that those of us in the countryside know the name of every bird, tree, flower, insect and animal.
There was a lot of local interest in our walk on a circular route starting from the village, which included 20 walkers from villages and towns along the Teifi valley, with some venturing further afield as a result of joining in the Llandysul and Pont-Tyweli walking weekend a week earlier.
Our course followed to Blaen-bach-crydd passing Commins to Lôn.
Across the Afon Cwerchyr ford is Felin Gernos, a two-storey former corn mill with its two millstones resting side by side following the mill closure in 1928.
From the old mill leat, its waterwheel was placed at Cenarth, by the miller’s brother, who was also a miller. The water of the Cwerchyr powered Felin Pen-beili still visible nearby and the larger mill at Maes-llyn.
Following quiet lanes we connected with the bridleway dropping down through Cwm Tywarch to Pwllcornel-isaf downstream of Felin Gernos where we crossed the Cwerchyr again to a gradual climb on a bridleway to Ffynnon-wen.
With a short road stretch, the route turned down through Bronwydd farm adjacent to the ruined mansion of the Baronets Lloyd.
Then it was up to Llangynllo Church, a place of worship since the sixth century, with a brief stop to appreciate its peaceful setting and views to the south-west and a look at the Lloyd family vault.
The church was locked as many are nowadays, so we were unable to view the interior. From here we returned to Coed y Bryn on the bridleway to Nantypobty.
Our walk in Llanllwni on 1 October was postponed due to the heavy rainfall predicted but the following day we were graced with a beautiful autumn day to join the Llandysul Walking Festival with a walk from Coed Foel.
