Welsh Quilt Centre
THE woman said to have single-handedly saved the heritage of Welsh quilts is closing the Welsh Quilt Centre in Lampeter after 10 years as she feels she has done as much as she can to raise the profile of Welsh quilts in Wales.
Jen Jones, 79, who has exhibited the whole spectrum of Welsh quilts from her private collection in the old town hall, has decided to close the centre in order to use her time and energy to promote the heritage of Welsh quilts abroad.
“Previously, she has been invited to exhibit in several prestigious foreign venues, but has been unable to take up these offers due to her commitment to running The Welsh Quilt Centre,” said a spokesperson.
“She is exceptionally proud of what she has achieved as the centre has drawn visitors from around the world to Lampeter’s old town hall to view Welsh quilts.
“Jen is now excited about her next step, which is to take her unparalleled collection of Welsh quilts out of Wales to travel the globe!”
‘Nos Da, Good Night!’ - the centre’s final exhibition - has just opened and will run until 10 November.
The show is being described as ‘a beautiful retrospective’ of the Centre’s exhibitions over the last 10 years.
The whole spectrum of Welsh quilts is on show, making this unmissable for lovers of textiles, art, history and Welsh culture.
Many facets of Welsh quilting are on display from the 19th century to the mid-20th century.
Early utilitarian flannel quilts are hung alongside paisley, wholecloth and patchwork Welsh quilts.
The wider influence of Welsh quilting is also touched upon, such as its effect upon the Amish communities of Ohio and Pennsilvania.
Kaffe Fassetts is the star guest exhibitor.
Jen beganm collecting textiles on arriving in Wales in the 1970s at a time Welsh quilts were widely considered ‘old bedding’ and were being readily discarded and thrown away.
Ms Jones, however, recognised their value and began salvaging the quilts and ‘Nos Da, Good Night!’ is said to show the creme-de-la-crème of her personal quilt collection.
