St Padarn’s

PADARN Sant - 517-2017: The series of special events celebrating the 1,500th anniversary of the arrival of St Padarn in Ceredigion, continued over the Easter period.

On Easter Monday, the Lady Chapel at St Padarn’s was full for the 10am Communion Service and some 20 people went over to the church hall for refreshments provided by the St Padarn’s Hospitality Committee, before a short talk by Margaret Haycock on a piece of early poetry that speaks about Padarn’s special crozier.

On Saturday, 22 April, a Catholic Mass for St Padarn at 4.30pm was celebrated in Welsh by the Roman Catholic Bishops Thomas Burns and Edwin Regan, and 100 people of different dominations attended.

Easter Services

The church was specially decorated for the Easter Festival, with an Easter Garden depicting the events of Easter from Maundy Thursday through to Easter Sunday, set up across two of the back pews. Covered with spring flowers and plants on Easter Sunday morning, it set the scene for the services.

The principal Easter Sunday services were well attended, and for the anthem at the 11.15am Choral Eucharist, the choir sang Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring with organist and choir master Darryl Walters, accompanying on the organ and chorister David Cooper conducting the choir. The service ending with Darryl Walters demonstrating his skills on the organ to the full, playing the service out with the Dubois Toccata.

Services

Next Sunday, 30 April, is the third Sunday of Easter. Services will be: 8am, Holy Communion using the 1984 Red Book setting; 9.30am, Cymun Bendigaid; and 11.15am, Choral Eucharist. The earlier start to the Welsh service will enable both congregations to enjoy tea and coffee together in the hall before the English service. All are welcome to our services.

Church Choir

The Aberystwyth Choral Society’s performance of Sir Michael Tippet’s very challenging “A Child of Our Time“, on Saturday, 22 April was a great success. Six members of the St Padarn’s church choir together with a member of the Welsh congregation, were singing in the choir and another member of the choir was playing in the orchestra.
