THE chairman, Margaret Howells, warmly welcomed everyone to the New Inn on Thursday, 9 November, and introduced guests Ivor and Michelle Anne Thomas, who had come to present the club a film screening.
The title was A Child’s Christmas in Wales, with Denham Elliot in the lead role as Granddad.
Members agreed it was a beautiful film illustrating Dylan Thomas’ wonderful story.
It was filmed in Montgomery and brought back happy memories of members’ own childhood Christmases with gas light and candles when they stayed up as long as they could by the big open fire, snuggled down in the deep sofa cushions in their dressing gowns.
The film sparked much discussion and the sharing of Christmas memories: how they tried to stay awake to see Father Christmas but never did; how they braved the cold while carol singing around the neighbourhood; the festive fare they only saw at Christmas; the sip of sherry they were allowed and the plum pudding with the silver thrupenny bit hidden inside it.
They were made to feel special as they were given the sweetest white meat on the wishbone to make a wish, they reminisced.
The film was warm, funny and nostalgic and gave everyone a glow.
Angela Payne gave the vote of thanks for a lovely afternoon’s entertainment. The raffle, drawn while members were enjoying a cup of tea, was won by Ann Hellier and Lloyd Jones.
Margaret gave details of the programme arranged for 2018 which includes NGS garden visits, talks and workshops and a games afternoon.
The last meeting of the year will be the Christmas lunch on Thursday, 14 December, at the rugby club in Lampeter.
The first meeting of the new year will be on Thursday, 11 January. This will be the club AGM, to be held at the New Inn.
