Llanfair WI held a craft afternoon for its monthly meeting in October.

There was a lower attendance than usual, with nine apologies caused by holidays, illnesses and travel difficulty.

As usual, the meeting began with the singing of Jerusalem, handing out birthday cards, then attention to WI business, with minutes of the last meeting read.

Barbara reported that the visit to Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor for lunch would have to be postponed until spring, as it was fully booked up at present. Members chose Castle Cottage for their Christmas lunch; Pat will make a booking for Tuesday, 11 December. Partners or companions are welcome, menus will be circulated.

Pauline reminded members that the AGM would be held at the November meeting. This would be Llanfair’s 97th AGM. Several people agreed for their names to be put forward to continue or volunteer for the committee. Sue will write to Meinir, inviting her to attend as WI adviser.

As previously agreed, the December monthly meeting will be held at 12.30pm, starting with a lunch for all members instead of afternoon tea. The majority voted for a finger buffet as their preference. Sue has checked the availability of the hall.

The newsletter was read, emphasising the closing dates for the flower arranging with cheese and wine at Llanelltyd, and for the Christmas event at Bala.

Members then worked on a variety of crafts. Knitting materials were available for capable knitters to make poppies for November. Mary brought her small loom to continue weaving items for the Harlech Horticutural Show.

Shirley was involved with some complicated embroidery, hopefully not too distracted by those making Christmas crackers on the same table.

Pauline brought three samples of Japanese gift wrapped presents, plus instruction sheets. Using these, Betty bravely attempted to make parallel pleats on a paper patterned with slanted, coloured triangles. Biscuits and tea were very welcome during tidying-up time.

Next meeting is on Friday, 9 November, AGM followed by ‘Pennies for Friendship’ by Sheila Maxwell.

Competition: The oldest penny.
