First World War centenary project

ON 11 November it will be 100 years since the Armistice was signed which ended the Great War in 1918.

That date will see the culmination of a project which has seen much activity in the village over the past two years.

With support from the Heritage Lottery, a memorial has been constructed in the centre of the village, which names all the people from the parish who served not only in that war but also those who served in the Second World War.

The memorial will be unveiled at a special ceremony on Sunday, 11 November.

In addition, a book has been written by Sally Leech which contains more than 100 biographies of all those named on the memorial, together with information about their families and places at which they lived. The book will be available soon.

On the day of the unveiling there will also be a display in the village hall, which is being prepared and assembled by Sally.

In the evening Llanfair residents will be lighting a beacon on high ground near Llanfair Fach. This will be part of a nationwide chain of beacons designed to commemorate the centenary of the ending of the First World War.
