Remembrance Day

A significant day for the population of Llanfair Clydogau, in that for the first time, there was a Remembrance Day commemoration which was centred around its new memorial which names all those from the parish who served in the armed forces, in either the First or Second World Wars, specifying those who died.

This was the result of a two-year project supported by the Heritage Lottery, which has seen residents working collaboratively to locate details of all those who served in the forces, including their family backgrounds and records of their service where possible.

Well in excess of 200 people attended the unveiling ceremony. Residents Tim Evans and Alun Jenkins carried out the unveiling at the start of service, which was led by Rev Bill Fillery of St Mary’s Church. Also participating in the service was Andrew James, standard bearer, on behalf of the British Legion and bugler John Frith, who played the Last Post.

There was also a public exhibition of many historic features of Llanfair in St Mary’s Church.

The new book written by Sally Leech, which incorporates the results of the research, was also published at this time. Llanfair Clydogau: Battle’s Over: A Village Remembers is over 350 pages long with many photographs. It names all those who served, and in most cases has photographs of the individuals, and describes their families and lives. Other aspects of the day included a gathering in the village hall after the remembrance service, for refreshments and in the evening a beacon was lit on high ground belonging to Dai Jones at Llanfair Fach.

Community council

The November meeting of the community council considered issues associated with recent flooding between Cellan and Cwmann and members decided to write to Carmarthenshire County Council to seek a solution.

Discussion also took place about the 2020 National Eisteddfod in Tregaron and the role of the parishes of Llanfair and Cellan in seeking to raise money and so contribute towards the funding of the Eisteddfod.
