THE latest community news from Llanfair Clydogau
Community Council
AT THE last community council meeting there was a discussion about the problem being faced with getting the County Council Highways Department to erect a road sign on the approach to Llanfair Mountain, warning of the unsuitability of the route for high sided and very long lorries.
It was decided to make a further approach to the council.
The community council, which covers the two parishes of Llanfair and Cellan has made three cooptions.
They are Linda Quelch, Dave Bartholomew and Ian Evans.
This takes the council up to its full membership size of 10.
An official from the Mid Wales Red Squirrel partnership has approached the Council with a request to erect a notice board near to the village hall, publicising its activities and drawing attention to the fact that Llanfair Mountain is a red squirrel area.
Detail would also be given about the conservation work of the organisation. A possible site was identified by the council members who agreed to support the request.
Llanfair Show
THE Village Show was held on August Bank Holiday Monday.
There was a good entry for all classes, including the new one of chickens.
The overall show winner was Iris Quan of Blaencwm. She was also the show winner in 2015.
All the exhibits were held in the village hall, or in and around the specially erected marquee.
There was also a very popular and successful barbecue accompanied by a bar with a fine range of craft beers. There was also an ice cream parlour which was well received by the public.
The president for this year was Elizabeth Mercer, a former Llanfair resident who now lives in Kent.
Commonwealth War Graves
THE Commonwealth War Graves Commission has provided St Mary’s Church with bilingual signs for display at the graveyard which advise that the site has war graves at that location.
Within the graveyard there are two of the Commission’s headstones which are inscribed with the names of armed forces service personnel.
On one of the headstones are the names of two men, who are brothers Evan Lloyd Jones and Benjamin Lloyd Jones.
Both died in the Second World War.
A second headstone records the death in 1917 of David Davies.
There is a further First World War soldier buried in the graveyard.
Evan David Williams died in 1919 from the gassing he received during the war and his body is buried within his family’s grave.
Village Hall
FURTHER improvements have been undertaken at the Hall, with the replacement of the worn fascia, guttering and downpipes.
Women’s Institute
THE first WI meeting of the new season will take place on Thursday, 28 September, at 7.30pm in the hall, when Lyn Ebenezer will talk about Operation Julie.
It will be an open meeting.
Computer skills class
TRAINING sessions are continuing in the village hall for those who are working on the acquisition of computer skills.
The people concerned are learning about the use of laptop computers as research tools.
In their work they are aided by the free wifi which is available to hall users.
