Guest speaker at the beginning of October was Marian Williams, Regional Manager of the Macular Society.

She said that AMD ‘Age Related Macular Degeneration’ is a common eye condition in older people. Many more people are developing AMD as we are living longer. It affects the most important part of the retina at the back of the eye - macula. The macula is at the centre of the retina and is vital for our central vision. Side vision is not usually affected.

It is important to get early diagnosis. The Macular Society has a range of free services and gives advice to people living with AMD.

Shirley Ferguson thanked Marian Williams for coming along and letting members know about the condition and the treatment and help that is available.

Hazel Rimmer won the raffle and the competition of an old toy was won by Shirley.

A relaxing evening was spent on 10 October when Claire Morris of Pecyn Pert came along to give advice on skin care and make-up and Val Blaney agreed to be the model. Claire said that she used all-natural products. She was trained in Windsor College and still goes on courses regularly. Hazel Rimmer, the president, proposed the vote of thanks.

On 17 October three members, Pamela Jennings, Cynthia Wainwright and Barbara Bartholomew, shared with the group the progress they had made with the NFWI Wales Tree Project.

Margaret Griffiths came along the following week to give a cookery demonstration.

She had brought along ingredients to make a Christmas cake and she shared the recipe with the group. She put some of the mixture in a Kilner jar and said that there would be enough mixture to make 10 jars, which could be given as gifts for Christmas. After the mixture had cooled the marzipan and fondant icing could be placed on top to decorate and then sealed in the jars. They will keep fresh for six months.

Betty Wakelin proposed the vote of thanks and Margaret Griffiths donated two cakes in Kilner Jars for the raffle and these were won by Margaret Peel, Olivia Lewis and Jane Askie.

Much hilarity was had on 31 October when they held a beetle drive. Val Blaney was the overall winner, with Margaret Peel getting the Booby. Old Freebies was the competition and first was Betty Wakelin, second Margaret Peel, joint third Val Blaney and Eirlys Jones. The raffle was won by Judy Lile.
