LLANILAR WI members recently visited the Aberystwyth University School of Art housed in the Edwardian Grade II listed building on the Buarth

They were welcomed by Professor Robert Meyrick, who gave an introductory talk before he guided the group around the museum and galleries.

He took them first to see a collection of old paintings and prints by well-known artists and to finish the tour they saw more recent work, which is research material for students.

WI president Hazel Rimmer thanked Professor Meyrick for his hospitality and a very interesting afternoon.

The following week the community centre was full as the group had invited local WIs to join them as their guest speaker was Dr Peter Dennis, a lecturer at the university in Aberystwyth.

He is chairman of the British Cave Rescue Council and had come to talk about the rescue of the boys from the cave in North Thailand in June/July 2018.

The boys had walked into the cave, but the rain had come and the tunnels had flooded and they were unable to get out.

Dr Dennis was based in Britain and was co-ordinating finding the equipment required to undertake the rescue.

Several specialist divers went out to Thailand and they required equipment e.g air cylinders, adaptors, wet suits and full face masks.

The British divers and two Australian divers, one of whom was a doctor had a big part to play in deciding that the safest way to get the boys out safely was to sedate them.

It was a very difficult journey out which took several hours and as we all know it was successful. It was a story that had caught the attention of people all over the world. The British divers were honoured on their return. Jane Hancock thanked Dr Dennis for coming along to tell members the story of the boys and their rescuers.
