MEMBERS celebrated St David’s Day with cawl and entertainment in the Falcon on 7 March.

They were entertained by Shelley Musker Turner on the harp.

An enjoyable evening.

On 13 March, several members spent the afternoon visiting the two local Homes at Abermad and Cysgod y Coed to entertain the residents singing Easter songs in English and Welsh.

The speaker the following evening was Michael Freeman, retired curator of Ceredigion Museum.

He said that there were over 700 old photographs at the Museum and gave a talk on Keeping the Family alive. He showed pictures of Women at Work in the 18th and 19th centuries.

They were the parent at home with the children and multi-tasking, washing, bundling, milking, dairy work, feed chickens, cockle gathering, carding, wool gathering, spinning, weaving and knitting while the men would be away in the mines or at sea.

A very interesting evening.

The competition for the evening was My Favourite family photo and 1st was Hazel Rimmer, 2nd Shirley Ferguson and 3rd Maureen Edwards.

The following week the speaker was Gwenda James who had come to talk about her life as a nurse.

She was brought up in Anglesey and went to Bangor to do a pre-nursing course before coming to Aberystwyth to train as a nurse.

After qualifying she worked in the hospital before taking a post as community nurse in Borth.

Later she went on courses to be able to work as a district nurse and came to Llanilar Surgery.

She has now specialised in Wound Care and many people have benefited from her expertise.

She hopes that a clinic specialising in problems with leg circulation will soon be set up once more in Aberystwyth to replace the one that served the community very well at Bodlondeb where she and other nurses helped many people.

She was thanked by Pam Jennings for coming along to tell her story and for her hard work over the years.
