HELEN Palmer captivated members at the July meeting with her talk on Witchcraft and Magic.

She outlined the various witchcraft acts, noting that the Witch Trials of England were not replicated in Wales.

Here accusations were mostly of fraud, as in the case of John Miles, who was sentenced to three months in Cardigan gaol for taking money for a charm.

The talk included examples of local Wise Women and Cunning Men, the latter role surviving into the 20th century.

There will be a change to the previously advertised programme. On 6 August Helen Tinsley will give a talk entitled: A glimpse on what was happening 50 years ago.

The lecture on Suffragettes is now scheduled for 1 October.
