History society
JANUARY has, by tradition, become a do-it-yourself evening for members and has produced some fascinating snippets of history, as well as a number of mysteries.
This year’s mystery was a small metal object that remained a puzzle even after one member discovered that it opened to reveal three prongs.
The group also practised using a button hook and examined three beautiful early photograph albums.
Research into a James family group photo of around 1900 showed links to the author T Llew Jones and possibly to the renowned eye surgeon Sir Tudor Thomas.
Another member described social and political conditions suffered by the framework knitters of the Midlands as background to the unrest that led in 1817 to the Pentrich Revolution and to the ring leader, Jeremiah Brandreth, being the last person in England to be sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered.
The society will next meet to hear Marianne Pateman share her research on the topic of Medieval Wall Paintings in Welsh Churches on Monday, 4 February, in Llanon Reading Room.
