HELEN Palmer, county archivist, gave a lively, illustrated talk entitled ‘Two women of Cardiganshire and their gift to us’.
Extracts from the diaries of Eliza Webley Parry and her sister Maria, who married William Brigstocke, illustrated the lives of minor gentry ladies in the early to mid 19th century.
The ladies were well travelled, taking in France and Italy. On visits to London they recorded going to the Empire Hall to see Tom Thumb and to the Royal Academy with Mr Powell.
Along with the collection of diaries, gifted to the Ceredigion Archives, are books of recipes, many of which may have been passed down to the ladies from a previous generation.
If there was a prize for the friendliest county archives, surely Ceredigion would be on the rostrum, the members said.
The online catalogue at www.archifdy-ceredigion.org.uk is easy to navigate and the blog, Reporting the Great War, at ww1ceredigion.wordpress.com is a gem.
Thanks and congratulations were extended to Helen and her colleagues.
On 4 September, Linda Hood will be give a talk entitled ‘Bungalows’, during which she will make particular reference to Llanon and Llanybydder.
