IT IS amazing what one can find out armed with a Readers ticket for the National Library of Wales.

So members discovered when Nigel Callaghan gave a talk with the gory title ‘Orrible Murders’.

Nigel had searched the Gale online newspaper archives for articles about Cardiganshire two centuries ago.

There were in fact few murders but many horrific farming accidents and the only success stories involved the apprehension of felons.

Newspapers across Britain were picking up and printing the more sensational events published in local papers and Police news.

It was unsurprising then that the rest of Britain would form a warped view of the Welshman and uncomplimentary language and rhymes would enter the vernacular in England.

Members were left considering how we consume news today; and how we should be aware of this influence in forming our opinions and prejudices about the ‘Other’.

On 6 November, Ron Pateman will speak on ‘A History of Fermented Foods’ and the social secretary will be collecting names for the Christmas meal at the White Swan.
