THE society was delighted to welcome back Nigel Callaghan, who gave a talk entitled A Pinta History Please.

The Ceredigion Local History Forum has produced a database and website of the public houses, breweries and the Temperance movement in Ceredigion.

Almost 1,000 licensed premises have been identified and over 100 are still open.

The pub was not just a place to drink, eat or stay the night. A clue is in the name ‘public’. Prior to the 1920s when memorial halls began to be built, pubs were the centre of life; a meeting place for societies, committees, magistrates courts, inquests and other public events.

From 1900 there was a move to reduce the number of pubs. Licensees paid a levy from which compensation was paid to pubs that closed.

The project welcomes information about pubs or Temperance houses in your village to be added to the website at pint-of-history.wales

New members are welcome at the annual meeting of the society to be held in the Reading Room at 7.30pm on Monday, 14 May.
