THE latest community news from Machynlleth

CAT

THE Centre for Alternative Technology hosted a visit from UK Government Minister for Wales, Lord Nick Bourne on Friday to press for ambitious action on climate change.

During the visit, Lord Bourne heard about CAT’s future plans and discussed how these could help to build a Zero Carbon Mid Wales.

Plans include the expansion of CAT’s postgraduate degrees and vocational training and the development of a renewed sustainable tourism destination.

CAT also used the visit to press the UK Government to commit to an earlier target of 2040 to show global leadership and ensure effective, equitable action on climate.

Measures needed to reach this target include investment in and support for renewable energy and energy efficiency measures, improvements in public transport and infrastructure for cycling and walking, and radical changes to agriculture and land use.

Community gardens

THE gardens will be 10 years old this December and plans are afoot to celebrate the occasion.

Among the planned events are a Christmas party, an all-day event at the Plas with activities and music in February, and ‘community orchard’ and edible hedge-planting days in March.

The community orchard will be around the edge of the wildflower meadow, and the group would also like to have new espalier fruit in the mini-orchard area for wheelchair users to manage.

On Saturday, at Blaeneinion, Artists Valley, Mach Maethlon presented a programme about transforming marginal lands into productive gardens.
